”If we value the pursuit of knowledge, we must be free to follow wherever that search may lead us. The free mind is not a barking dog, to be tethered on a ten-foot chain.”
If Yoga was designed to take effect only on the surface, we could be forgiven to expect immediate visible results. But Yoga induces change at all levels of our existence. Its influence reaches the depths of our mind. So, we must prepare ourselves for long practice to allow Yoga to reach deep down into us.
Of course it is possible to see positive change even after one or two sessions of proper Yoga posture; after six months of continuous practice, we should feel very calm and balanced. However, to realize its full, deep psychological and spiritual potential, we must be prepared for a life of comprehensive yoga practice, ranging from moral disciplines, postures, breath control, to meditation. No one can guide us to the light, if we do not actively and persistently seek it. We must find the light within us.
What then is the spiritual work? First and foremost, it is the abandoning of old patterns of behavior and thoughts to build and link new roadways within our brain and our mind. It is an endeavor that takes time and effort.
If we seek to free ourselves from ignorance, misery and selfishness, we must understand, master and live the ideals and attitudes that increase the understanding and control of ourselves, and guide us to enlightenment or spiritual liberation. Yoga is the distilled wisdom of thousands of teachers that we can tap for ourselves, and that provides us everything we need to achieve the complete transformation of ourselves. As it says in the Bhagavad-Gita:
”No effort in the path of Yoga is ever wasted.”
